Exam schedule

The examination opened on 10 August 2026 and continues until 5 September 2026. The Department of Examinations confirmed that arrangements were finalised ahead of the start date.

Two separate attempts to postpone the examination were dismissed in court: the Court of Appeal rejected a petition in July 2026, and the Supreme Court threw out a further bid in early August. Concerns had also been raised about weather disruption, with a special meeting called to assess the risk to both the Advanced Level and Grade 5 Scholarship examinations.

In the run-up, private tuition classes for A/L and Grade 5 Scholarship candidates were required to stop in the week beginning 2 August 2026, under the customary pre-examination restriction.

Question paper security

On 14 August 2026 the Commissioner General of Examinations publicly dismissed circulating rumours of question paper leaks, urging candidates to disregard them and stay focused.

What happens after the exam

Results are released by the Department of Examinations, after which the University Grants Commission (UGC) publishes Z-score cut-off marks that determine eligibility for state university degree programmes. A release date for the 2026 results has not yet been announced.

How Z-scores work

Z-scores are standardised statistical values that let the UGC compare candidates who sat different subject streams on a common scale, because raw marks vary in difficulty between streams and districts. The published cut-off is the minimum Z-score needed to be considered for a given degree programme; candidates below the threshold for their stream do not qualify for state university placement in that intake cycle.

For the previous cycle, the UGC released the Z-score cut-off marks for 2025 A/L university admissions on 1 August 2026. Candidates from that cohort should check their individual Z-score against the stream-specific and district-specific cut-offs, then proceed to course selection and placement administered by the UGC.

The route into A/L

More than 225,000 students qualified for Advanced Level studies from the 2025 G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, whose results were released in June 2026. Applications for the 2026 O/L examination opened on 3 July 2026.

Official sources

Examination timetables, admission cards and results are issued by the Department of Examinations; university cut-off marks and placement are handled by the University Grants Commission.
