Special consumer protection program launched ahead of festive season
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has introduced a special program aimed at protecting consumers as the festive season approaches, announced Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon. He shared that since March 20, over 1,000 inspections have taken place, leading to legal actions against wrongdoers. More than 170 traders have been prosecuted for issues like hoarding rice and selling it at higher prices, with penalties enforced. Samarakoon mentioned that nearly 5,000 inspections have occurred this year as part of ongoing efforts to monitor market practices and safeguard consumers in Sri Lanka. Regarding the rising prices, he linked the recent hikes in certain goods to conflicts in the Middle East. However, he reassured that discussions are ongoing with importers, local producers, and suppliers to avoid market shortages. He also noted a temporary shortage of gas in the country but confirmed that a shipment has arrived, and distribution is now taking place. The CAA Chairman urged traders to refrain from hoarding essential items like gas, warning that strict legal actions will follow for any violations.
