A Canadian man was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early today, April 3, for trying to smuggle over 21 kilograms of ‘Kush’ cannabis into Sri Lanka. The police narcotics bureau (PNB) officers caught him with drugs valued at about Rs. 217.79 million. The 42-year-old suspect works as a building contractor. According to customs officials, he bought the cannabis in Bangkok, Thailand, then traveled to Hong Kong before arriving at BIA on Cathay Pacific flight CX 611 at 12:30 a.m. The drugs, totaling 21 kilograms and 779 grams, were carefully packed in 20 packets hidden inside his two travel bags. The suspect will appear in front of the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today to seek a detention order. After that, he will be transferred to the PNB Headquarters in Colombo for further investigation.
