President Dissanayake Chairs High-Level Meeting to Bolster Sri Lanka's El Niño Preparedness

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened a high-level meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Friday morning to assess and strengthen the country's readiness to tackle the effects of the El Niño climate phenomenon.

The session brought together members of the Special Cabinet Sub-Committee and the Officials' Committee, both bodies specifically appointed to coordinate the national response to El Niño-related challenges facing Sri Lanka.

Held under the direct patronage of the President, the meeting formed part of a broader government effort to ensure that preparedness measures are firmly in place ahead of any intensification of El Niño conditions, which can bring prolonged drought, disrupted rainfall patterns, and significant stress to the island's agriculture and water supply sectors.

Government Takes Proactive Stance

By chairing the discussion personally, President Dissanayake signalled the administration's commitment to treating climate-related risks as a top national priority. El Niño events have historically caused considerable hardship for Sri Lankan farming communities, particularly those dependent on seasonal monsoon rains for irrigation and cultivation.

The convening of dedicated sub-committees at Cabinet level reflects a structured, whole-of-government approach to managing the phenomenon's potential economic and humanitarian consequences across the island.

Further details on the specific measures and directives agreed upon during the meeting are expected to be communicated by the Presidential Secretariat in due course.
