EC says it is ready to hold PC polls under any system approved by Parliament

The Election Commission has informed the Parliamentary Select Committee on Provincial Council Elections that it stands ready to conduct the polls using any electoral system that Parliament approves. This information was shared when Election Commission members and officials attended a meeting with the Select Committee on Thursday. Officials from the Attorney General’s Department were also present and provided a report outlining the legal challenges and procedural issues related to holding the Provincial Council elections. The Select Committee has been tasked with reviewing the electoral framework for the Provincial Council polls and making recommendations to Parliament. Recently, Minister Vijitha Herath was appointed to chair the Committee, which was formed to tackle the issues surrounding the long-overdue Provincial Council elections.
