UN Secretary General welcomes ceasefire in Middle East
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his approval of the two-week ceasefire announced by the US and Iran, according to his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, on Tuesday. Guterres urged all parties involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to follow international law and adhere to the ceasefire terms to help create a lasting peace in the area. This statement was made after US President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he had agreed to halt bombings and attacks on Iran for two weeks. Guterres stressed the importance of ending hostilities immediately to protect civilians and reduce human suffering during the crisis. He also acknowledged the mediation efforts from Pakistan and other countries that helped bring about the ceasefire agreement, as mentioned by Dujarric. "The Secretary-General's Personal Envoy Jean Arnault is in the region to assist in the quest for lasting peace," he added.
