Vinivida Foundation Invokes RTI Act to Access Key Legal Documents in USD 1 Billion X-Press Pearl Compensation Case

The Vinivida Foundation has formally invoked the Right to Information (RTI) Act to obtain critical legal documents related to the landmark USD 1 billion compensation awarded by Sri Lanka's Supreme Court in connection with the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.

Documents Requested

The foundation has sought access to three specific documents tied to the high-profile case. These include an affidavit filed by the Attorney General dated 22nd September 2025, a motion dated 18th September 2025, and a further motion dated 13th January 2026, all of which pertain to the Supreme Court's compensation ruling.

Significance of the RTI Application

The move signals growing public interest in ensuring transparency around the legal proceedings stemming from one of the worst maritime environmental disasters to affect Sri Lanka in recent history. The X-Press Pearl container ship sank off the coast of Colombo in 2021, releasing tonnes of plastic pellets, chemicals, and debris that caused extensive damage to Sri Lanka's coastline, marine ecosystems, and fishing communities.

By utilising the RTI Act, the Vinivida Foundation is seeking to hold authorities publicly accountable for how the billion-dollar compensation matter is being handled at the highest judicial levels.
