Russia and China have blocked a Gulf draft resolution at the UN Security Council that aimed to promote coordinated defensive actions to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Eleven nations supported the resolution, while two members, Pakistan and Colombia, chose to abstain. After several weeks of discussions, the draft was changed from its original strong military force stance under Chapter VII to a milder version that simply encouraged defensive measures. The meeting was led by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. Before the vote took place, he informed the council members that the draft was not meant to create a new situation but was a serious reaction to ongoing aggressive actions from Iran that needed to stop. He warned that if the Security Council did not act against the use of this crucial waterway for leverage, it could lead to serious consequences worldwide and set a dangerous precedent in other straits and waterways, turning the world into chaos.
