Iran war could “spiral out of control,” Qatari official says
Qatar warned on Tuesday that the situation in the region is nearing a critical point where it could “spiral out of control.” When asked by CNN’s Matthew Chance if Qatar believes the war can be resolved before the upcoming US deadline, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari stated, “We’ve been urging all parties to find a solution to this war before it spirals out of control.” US President Donald Trump has cautioned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” as the 8 p.m. ET deadline approaches for Iran to make a deal and allow access to the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesperson emphasized that any agreement with Iran must involve all regional players and “cannot exclude” any local partners. Qatar aims for an agreement that establishes “a new regional security framework” along with “international guarantees” that uphold international law, according to al-Ansari. He also noted that Qatar is not currently involved in mediation between the United States and Iran. The spokesperson pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz should not be controlled by just one country and should not be monopolized by any single state.
