CEB estimates Rs. 7.6 billion direct loss from substandard coal imports
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has reported to the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee that it expects a direct financial loss of Rs. 7,672 million due to poor-quality coal imported on eight ships. The 900-megawatt Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant runs on coal, but recent lab tests showed that the coal from these shipments did not meet necessary standards, causing a stir. In a letter to the committee, the CEB outlined the expected financial losses tied to using this substandard coal for electricity generation. The total estimated loss is more than Rs. 7.6 billion. Additionally, on the 23rd, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa mentioned that reports have indicated that coal from a ninth shipment brought in by the government also failed to meet the required standards.
