The Health and Mass Media Minister, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has confirmed that coal samples sent to India have failed to meet the necessary calorific value. This issue is linked to a coal shipment that has raised public concerns. While speaking to reporters in Kalutara, the Minister announced that penalties would be imposed on the supplier involved. He explained, “There was no problem during the buying process. After we imported the first 60,000 metric tonnes, tests done in India by the coal supplier showed a lack of the required calorific value. As a result, we will impose penalties.” He added that if the coal samples tested after arriving in Sri Lanka do not meet the standards, the responsible party will face penalties without exception. Additionally, D.V. Chanaka, a Member of Parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), informed Parliament that the use of low-quality coal for the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant has led to losses of nearly Rs. 10 billion.
