Major Drug Bust in Monaragala: Two Nabbed With Over a Tonne of Cannabis and 54,000 Plants

Law enforcement authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in the Monaragala district, arresting two suspects in connection with separate raids that uncovered more than 1,044 kilograms of cannabis along with over 54,000 cannabis plants.

Large-Scale Operations Dismantled

The arrests were made following two targeted raids carried out by security personnel in the area. The operations resulted in the seizure of what authorities are describing as a substantial haul, pointing to organised cultivation and distribution activity in the region.

Among the items recovered during the raids were:

  • Over 1,044 kilograms of processed cannabis
  • More than 54,000 cannabis plants
  • Two suspects taken into custody

Blow to Drug Networks in the Region

The scale of the seizure suggests that the suspects may have been involved in a well-established drug cultivation network operating in the Monaragala district, which has in recent years drawn the attention of narcotics enforcement agencies due to its remote terrain often exploited by traffickers.

The discovery of tens of thousands of live cannabis plants alongside a large quantity of processed drug material indicates that both cultivation and preparation for distribution were actively underway.

The two arrested individuals are currently in custody and are expected to be produced before a magistrate as investigations continue. Authorities have indicated that further inquiries are ongoing to determine the full extent of the network and whether additional suspects are involved.

Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies have intensified crackdowns on cannabis cultivation across rural and forested areas of the country in recent months, with Monaragala emerging as a focal point in several high-profile drug-related operations.

54,000 plants means this was going on for years. who was protecting them?
