About 100 mm rainfall likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts

In the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts, showers and thunderstorms could happen after 1:00 p.m. Winds of 30 to 40 km/h may occur at times in the Western slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Southern provinces, and Trincomalee district. The public is advised to take precautions to reduce the risk of damage from strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms. A flood warning for the Aththanagalu Oya basin has been extended until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25. This warning, first issued on May 22, 2026, at 5:30 a.m., will remain in effect for the next 48 hours. Residents and drivers in the affected areas should stay alert. Disaster Management Authorities are also urged to take necessary precautions. Additionally, a meeting with the Catholic Council took place on Thursday, May 21, at the Presidential Secretariat. It was co-chaired by Minister of Science and Technology, Chrishantha Abeysena, and Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake. The discussions focused on administrative matters concerning Catholic schools that have been taken over by the Government. They talked about creating a structured teacher recruitment system for Catholic religious education, the importance of hiring Catholic nuns and priests as teachers, and establishing a way to collaborate with the Ministry of Education on managing these Government-acquired schools. It was agreed that meetings with the Catholic Council would occur three times a year, with Senior Additional Secretary to the President, Roshan Gamage, serving as the Secretary for this group. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith expressed gratitude on behalf of the Catholic Council to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Government for facilitating the meeting.
