Additionally, a minor flood situation is likely to develop in the low-lying floodplain areas of the Kalu River within the next few hours. The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has issued Landslide Early Warnings for Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts, valid until 9:00 AM on May 23, 2026. LEVEL I (RED) landslide warnings have been issued for the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and nearby areas of Deraniyagala, Ruwanwella, and Dehiowita in Kegalle, as well as Ratnapura, Ayagama, Kuruwita, and Eheliyagoda in Ratnapura. LEVEL II (AMBER) warnings are in effect for Seethawaka and Padukka in Colombo, Attanagalla in Gampaha, and Horana, Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya, and Palindanuwara in Kalutara. In Kegalle, Yatiyanthota is also under this warning, along with Pelmadulla, Kiriella, Elapatha, Kalawana, and Nivithigala in Ratnapura. LEVEL I (YELLOW) warnings apply to Mirigama and Divulapitiya in Gampaha, Agalawatta and Mathugama in Kalutara, Bulathkohupitiya in Kegalle, and Ambagamuwa in Nuwara Eliya. Given the heavy rain affecting the Kalu River Basin and the water level data from the Irrigation Department's hydrological gauging stations, a Minor Flood Situation is expected in the floodplain areas of the Kalu River soon. The affected areas include Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, Elapatha, and Kiriella in Ratnapura District. Residents and travelers in these regions are strongly advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Disaster Management Authorities are requested to act accordingly.
