Showers likely to last for several days: Met Dept.
The Meteorology Department has issued a warning about a low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka that is expected to develop into a low-pressure area today, November 11. Showery weather is anticipated to continue for several days. According to the weather advisory, most areas of the island will experience cloudy skies. Showers or thundershowers are likely in many regions after 1:00 p.m., with some places possibly receiving heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm. Morning showers are also predicted for the Western, Southern, Eastern, and Northern Provinces, as stated in the advisory. The Department has advised the public to take proper precautions against temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur with thundershowers to reduce potential damage. Malith Fernando, a meteorologist with the Department of Meteorology, mentioned that a notable increase in rainfall is expected across the country in the coming days. During a media briefing on November 10, he explained that the rainy weather seen in recent days is likely to continue. Fernando clarified that the current weather conditions do not represent a full monsoon, but rather a pre-monsoon phase. He noted that with the low-pressure system forming, monsoon conditions could set in around May 20, leading to further weather changes in the country. Areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, North-western, Northern, and North-central provinces, as well as Trincomalee district, could see rainfall of approximately 100 mm.
