The Department of Meteorology issued a weather forecast on 11 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. They reported that a low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka may turn into a low-pressure area within the next 36 hours. As a result, the rainy conditions across the island are likely to persist for several days. Most regions will experience showers or thundershowers at times, with cloudy skies due to this weather system. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from temporary strong winds and lightning during the thundershowers. In other news, SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekera has reached out to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to urge the JVP-NPP government to honor the rights of the Opposition. He informed The Island that they would not let the NPP hide the truth about the theft of Treasury funds totaling USD 2.5 million. Jayasekera claimed that Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickremaratne has denied the Opposition its rightful privileges at the government's request. He also mentioned that the Speaker's actions regarding Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne have been reported to the IPU and other international organizations. In his letter to the IPU Secretary General, MP Jayasekera stated, “I respectfully submit this petition for the attention and intervention of the Inter-Parliamentary Union regarding issues of parliamentary accountability, the rights of elected officials, and the proper functioning of constitutional oversight in Sri Lanka's Parliament. On 06 May 2026, I, Dayasiri Jayasekara MP, made a formal request to the Hon. Speaker of Parliament for permission, under the Parliament (Powers and Privileges) Act No. 21 of 1953 and Standing Order 29(1), to raise a question of privilege about alleged constitutional and parliamentary violations by Mr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury of Sri Lanka. The proposed privilege motion addressed issues including: 1. Alleged breaches of Articles 148, 149, and 150 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka concerning parliamentary control over public finances; 2. Alleged failure to report to Parliament about a questionable and unlawful transfer of roughly USD 2.5 million from the Treasury.”
