Fast bowling riches in focus as Bangladesh and Pakistan switch to Test mode
This upcoming series occurs at an unusual time, as neither team has played Test cricket in the last six months. Bangladesh's last series was a straightforward home victory over Ireland, while Pakistan faced South Africa in October, winning one of the two Tests. This series marks the only Test cricket Pakistan has played in 14 months, as they focused on T20 cricket in preparation for the recent T20 World Cup and the subsequent Pakistan Super League (PSL). Only four days will separate the end of the PSL from the first day of the Test in Mirpur. Bangladesh has had a more challenging year, choosing not to travel to India for the T20 World Cup. As a result, their only international matches this year were an ODI series against Pakistan and a white-ball series against New Zealand. They won all three series, giving them a perfect record in international series for 2026, a streak that Pakistan will be eager to challenge more effectively than they did two years ago. In the 2024 series, Bangladesh's fast bowlers outperformed those from Pakistan. Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed showcased excellent movement, while Nahid Rana's speed caused significant problems for the Pakistani batsmen. Sajid Khan and Noman Ali have thrived on these favorable conditions. If Mirpur supports spinners, Pakistan will feel confident in their ability to compete strongly against Bangladesh. Mushfiqur Rahim will play his 100th Test against Pakistan, having scored a century against Ireland last November. There has been talk about his retirement, but he has not rushed into any decisions. His impressive 191 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi showed his continued desire to score runs, as did his celebration during his milestone match against Ireland. Mushfiqur is still a crucial player in Bangladesh's middle order, and Pakistan will need to keep a close eye on him, especially in Dhaka. Sajid Khan has had limited opportunities in international cricket, mainly playing home Tests. However, his first six matches were all away, with his best performance occurring in Mirpur, Bangladesh. During that match, rain disrupted play for nearly three days, yet Sajid managed to take eight wickets in Bangladesh's first inning, bowling them out for just 87 runs. He took four more wickets in the second inning, leading to a huge innings victory for Pakistan. This series represents a significant chance for Sajid to demonstrate his skills outside of Pakistan. Bangladesh is expec...
