Showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 pm.
The Department of Meteorology issued the weather forecast at 5:30 AM on May 5, 2026. The Intertropical Convergence Zone, where the winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, is influencing the weather in the country. Due to this, an increase in rainfall is anticipated after May 6. In the early morning hours, misty weather may occur in some areas of the Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara district. The Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces, along with the Ampara district, will experience cloudy skies. Morning showers are likely in these regions. After 1:00 PM, showers or thundershowers are expected in most areas of the island. Some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, and Polonnaruwa districts, may see fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm. Strong winds, ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, may occur at times in the Northern and North-central provinces and in the Hambantota district. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce damage from temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Showers are also expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Eastern provinces, along with Polonnaruwa, Galle, and Matara districts after 2:00 PM.
