A senior police officer has been placed in remand custody in connection with an investigation into funds of unexplained origin allegedly used to purchase a motor vehicle, authorities confirmed.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Varuni Bogahawatta was remanded by a court until Friday, the 6th, as investigators probe the source of the money in question.
Investigation Into Unexplained Wealth
The case against CIP Bogahawatta centres on allegations that funds whose origins could not be satisfactorily accounted for were used in the acquisition of a vehicle. The investigation is part of broader efforts by law enforcement authorities to clamp down on unexplained wealth and financial misconduct within public institutions, including the police service itself.
The remand order was issued pending further inquiries, with the court granting investigators additional time to examine the financial dealings linked to the accused officer.
Accountability Within the Force
The arrest and remanding of a serving Chief Inspector highlights growing scrutiny of financial conduct among law enforcement officers in Sri Lanka. Authorities have in recent years intensified efforts to hold public officials accountable for assets and expenditures that cannot be justified against their known income.
CIP Bogahawatta is expected to be produced before the court again on Friday, at which point the court will determine whether the remand period will be extended or alternative arrangements made as the investigation continues.
Further details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through the judicial process.
