Showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces
Issued at 5:30 a.m. on 24 April 2026 by the Department of Meteorology Misty weather is expected in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central, and Uva provinces, as well as in Vavuniya and Kurunegala districts during the early morning hours. Coastal areas of the Southern province and Kalutara district may see some rain in the morning. After 1:00 p.m., showers or thundershowers are likely across most of the island. Some areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Southern provinces could experience heavy rainfall, exceeding 75 mm. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce risks from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. The Heat Index is expected to reach caution levels in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern provinces, and in Monaragala district during the day. Warm Weather Advisory Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre Released at 3:30 p.m. on 23 April 2026, valid for 24 April 2026. The Heat Index, which reflects how temperature feels to the human body, might rise to 'Caution level' in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern provinces, and in Monaragala district throughout the day. This forecast is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperatures and reflects conditions felt by the body, not the maximum temperature itself. The Department of Meteorology generated this forecast for the next day's period based on global numerical weather prediction models. The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services has provided guidelines on the effects of the heat index on the human body. ACTION REQUIRED For Job Sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded areas as often as you can. Indoors: Check on elderly and sick individuals. Vehicles: Never leave children unattended. Outdoors: Limit strenuous activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear light and white or light-colored clothing. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Landslide Early Warnings for Kurunegala and Ratnapura districts, effective from 4:00 p.m. on 23 April 2026 to 4:00 p.m. on 24 April 2026. Level 1 landslide warnings have been issued for the Divisional Secretaries Divisions and nearby areas of Rideegama in Kurunegala district and Kuruwita, Kalawana, Ratnapura, Nivithigala, Pelmadulla, and Eheliyagoda in Ratnapura district.
