Trump announces ceasefire with Iran if Strait of Hormuz reopened
On Tuesday, April 7, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, just before a deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that if this did not happen, there would be significant attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed that it also accepted the two-week ceasefire. Trump's post on social media reflected his shift from earlier threats when he stated that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if his demands were not met. He explained that the ceasefire depends on Iran agreeing to stop its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the strait, which is crucial as it carries about 20% of the world’s oil shipments. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” He added that the US had already achieved its military goals and was close to a long-term peace agreement with Iran and peace in the Middle East. Trump mentioned that Iran had put forward a 10-point proposal that could be a good starting point for negotiations. He expressed hope that a final agreement could be reached during the ceasefire. The ceasefire was influenced by discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Muni, who asked the US to delay military actions against Iran. Trump stated that this is “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.” He concluded by saying, “On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
