At Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), two Chinese men were arrested for trying to smuggle a large amount of cigarettes into Sri Lanka. The suspects, aged 23 and 24, arrived from Kunming, China, at about 1:10 a.m. on the 5th of the month, according to an Ada Derana report. They were caught while trying to leave through the “Green Channel,” which is for travelers with no goods to declare at the airport in Katunayake. Customs officials found 121 cartons containing 24,200 sticks of Chinese-made cigarettes hidden in their bags. The value of the seized cigarettes is estimated to be over Rs. 3.63 million. The two men are now in the hands of airport customs, and further investigations are ongoing.
