A-10 aircraft hit by Iranian air defenses, second US aircraft to go down in the Middle East
A U.S. official has confirmed that another aircraft crashed in the Middle East on Friday. This information was shared on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the military situation. Iranian state media reported that the U.S. A-10 aircraft was struck by Iranian air defenses, according to a statement from Iran’s Army public relations office. The A-10, commonly known as the Warthog, is designed for single-pilot operation. CNN reported that this A-10 Warthog went down close to the Strait of Hormuz after being intercepted and targeted by Iran’s air defense systems. The New York Times noted that the pilot was rescued safely and that a search-and-rescue mission was ongoing for another airman. This incident marks the second aircraft loss in the Middle East on the same day. Earlier, another U.S. fighter jet was shot down in Iran. Various officials told media outlets that one crew member had been saved, but the status of the second crew member remains unknown. An Israeli military officer informed the Associated Press that at least one crew member ejected from the jet. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity prior to a U.S. announcement, mentioned that Israel is assisting with the operation. Footage on social media displayed American drones, aircraft, and helicopters flying over the hilly area where the Iranian channel claimed at least one pilot had parachuted from the fighter jet.
