The Kalatuwawa Water Treatment Plant, a key source of clean drinking water for Colombo and nearby areas, has around 20 days of water left, according to Engineer Chandana Bandara, the Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board. During a media briefing on February 2, Bandara explained that water use is rising because of the ongoing dry weather. He warned that due to the severe dryness and increased water demand, there may be limits on drinking water production soon. Additionally, the Labugama Water Treatment Plant has about 50 days of water supply remaining. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board announced a 24-hour water cut for Padukka, Homagama, and Pelanwatta because of the water shortage. Disna Pannila, the General Manager for the Western Central region of the Water Board, said this water cut is due to reduced water production from the Labugama-Kalatuwawa reservoir.
