Future of the Strait of Hormuz is mainly a “regional issue,” Qatar says
Qatar stated on Tuesday that the future of the Strait of Hormuz is mainly a “regional issue” that should be settled through “regional consensus.” Majed Al-Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry, shared this during a news conference. He emphasized that leaders in the Gulf region have consistently communicated the need for their involvement in any future agreements regarding the safety of the region, which includes the Strait of Hormuz. When asked by a reporter about claims that US President Donald Trump might seek to end the war with Iran without reopening this vital waterway, Al-Ansari responded, saying, “It is an international issue that affects the whole world, but it is primarily a regional issue that needs regional consensus.” The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Trump has expressed to aides his readiness to conclude the US military efforts against Iran, even if the Strait of Hormuz remains mostly closed.
