The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, Professor T.M.W.J. Bandara, has stressed the need for people to use energy in a careful and organized way due to the current situation. He pointed out that generating electricity from 5 p.m. to early morning relies a lot on fossil fuels, so public cooperation is very important right now. Professor Bandara mentioned that reducing electricity use can help cut down on expensive fossil fuels used for power generation. Using electricity wisely, he added, can lower the country's generation costs and decrease consumers' electricity bills. He also encouraged everyone to switch to energy-saving appliances. The Sustainable Energy Authority has set up a labeling system to help consumers choose energy-efficient products like LED bulbs, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Additionally, he announced that new laws are being developed to stop the import of inefficient electrical appliances into Sri Lanka. The government has started a short-term program to enhance energy efficiency as well. Professor Bandara pointed out that Sri Lanka is facing a shortage of crude oil, leading to greater dependence on diesel for electricity, which raises costs significantly. However, he noted that using solar power during the day offers a chance for people to change their daily habits. By doing energy-heavy tasks during the daytime, both electricity generation costs and household bills can be lowered. He urged the public to adopt these habits to assist with the country's energy management efforts.
