A controversy has arisen following reports that a birthday party was held for Ishara Sewwandi, who is currently in the custody of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) due to allegations related to the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa. Sewwandi's birthday took place on Sunday, the 29th. The Head of the Colombo Range, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nishantha Soysa, received information about the planned celebration inside the CCD. This tip-off came from a private source and was later verified by an intelligence officer from the unit. In response, the DIG called the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) to immediately stop the event. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahesh Kumarasinghe was sent to the location, and the DIG arrived shortly after to manage the situation. Investigations found that Sewwandi’s brother brought in the cake, and her aunt and cousin also visited for the celebration. It was revealed that there were plans to take Sewwandi out of her cell to cut the cake. A senior police officer mentioned that the OIC had approved the event but advised everyone involved not to take any photos to prevent them from being posted online. Statements have been collected from about 15 people, including Sewwandi’s relatives and police officers who were on duty. The DIG has formally requested the Police Special Investigation Unit to quickly look into the OIC's actions. Investigations show that the OIC had been in contact with Sewwandi’s brother before the party. Police sources suggest that the OIC might have helped organize the event, and disciplinary measures, including possible suspension, are expected. Further investigations are ongoing under the direct oversight of DIG Nishantha Soysa.
