The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved a rise in electricity tariffs starting April 1. In February, the Ceylon Electricity Board asked the PUCSL for a 13.56% increase in rates for the second quarter of this year. According to the new tariff changes from the PUCSL for domestic users: The PUCSL has chosen not to raise tariffs for religious and charitable organizations that use less than 180 units each month. For those sectors, a 9.6% increase in tariffs will apply only to usage above 180 units. Additionally, the tariff for general and household consumers will increase by 8%, while the industrial sector will see a smaller rise of 8.7%, as stated by the Commission. Government institutions will face a 14.4% hike in electricity rates. The PUCSL will also introduce a new tariff category specifically for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations to encourage the use of EVs and manage peak demand. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka held several public meetings to gather feedback from stakeholders regarding the proposed electricity tariff changes for 2026.
