P. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), took part in an important discussion about how the Asia-Pacific region is changing in the global economy at the Asia in 2050 Conference held recently. The event also included notable speakers like Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, and Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Malaysia’s Finance Minister, as reported by the CBSL. Dr. Georgieva began the session by highlighting Asia’s remarkable growth over the past fifty years. She mentioned the strong foundations, innovative spirit, and social unity that have contributed to the region's achievements. However, she also pointed out new challenges such as older populations, youth unemployment, rapid changes in technology, and climate risks. She emphasized the need for policies that support inclusive and sustainable growth. Furthermore, she called for increased regional integration, investment in capital markets, and using trade strategically to enhance resilience and dynamism across Asia. During the discussion, Governor Weerasinghe shared lessons from Sri Lanka’s struggle with one of its worst economic and financial crises. He highlighted the need for strong macroeconomic and financial safeguards, improved institutions, and essential structural reforms to regain stability. Key reforms he mentioned were creating an independent central bank and establishing fiscal rules under the Public Financial Management Act. The Governor pointed out that effective communication with the public was vital for gaining support for tough reforms. This approach helped Sri Lanka stabilize, lower inflation, and improve fiscal and financial conditions in a short time, according to the CBSL. He also noted the importance of regional integration, digitalization, and renewable energy as areas where countries like Sri Lanka can work together to promote resilience and mutual growth.
