The First Secretary for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Indian High Commission in Colombo delivered a consignment of Bailey Bridge components weighing 214 tonnes to the Chairman of the Road Development Authority (RDA) and officials from the Disaster Management Center (DMC) today. This shipment arrived in Colombo from Visakhapatnam on February 24, 2026. The delivery of these Bailey Bridges is part of a larger Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Package worth USD 450 million, which was announced by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, during his visit to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah, according to the Indian High Commission. The bridges are set to be installed in various locations throughout the country. Indian Army engineers are conducting technical assessments for the installation, in close collaboration with the Sri Lankan Army and the Road Development Authority. Previously, India had provided four Bailey Bridges to Sri Lanka, with two being placed in the Kilinochchi District and two on the Kandy–Ragala Road. These bridges have been essential in restoring connectivity in difficult areas, allowing local communities better access and helping to resume important services and economic activities. India remains committed to assisting Sri Lanka in its recovery efforts, focusing on rebuilding infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and supporting affected communities, the statement added.
