Police reveal major breakthrough in Akuregoda double murder investigation
The Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for the Western Province, Sajeewa Medawatte, announced that new information has emerged regarding the recent double murder of a lawyer and his wife in a supermarket parking lot in Akuregoda. During a media briefing at the Police Media Division on the 25th, he stated that the killings were carried out by an organized criminal gang. Initially, police had very little information, as the criminals used various tactics to execute the crime. The Senior DIG explained that investigators began with the knowledge that the assailants arrived in a vehicle and conducted the shooting. However, through careful investigations, the police managed to turn that limited information into useful leads. He confirmed that the case has been significantly advanced. In further details, SDIG Sajeewa Medawatte mentioned that four vehicles were involved in the crime, and all of them are now in police custody. One of the vehicles was set ablaze, and all suspects have been arrested except for the driver of that vehicle. He also noted that one of the shooters was captured on the 25th in Monaragala, making the total number of arrested shooters two. The police requested public help to find one suspect, and extensive media coverage aided in his capture based on tips from the public. Additionally, two other individuals were arrested alongside the shooter in Monaragala and were transported to Colombo for further questioning.
