Energy efficiency is a national priority for development – PM Harini
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that improving energy efficiency is crucial for boosting Sri Lanka's economy. She noted that it goes beyond just reducing usage; it plays a significant role in the country's development. The Prime Minister spoke at the Sri Lanka National Energy Efficiency Awards Ceremony, which was held in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and the Ministry of Power and Energy at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. This event took place on Tuesday (24) under the theme “Energy Efficiency: Refueling the Economy.” During the ceremony, Jeewaka Thushara from the World Trade Center Colombo was honored as the Outstanding Energy Manager. Gold Awards for Energy Efficiency were awarded to several organizations, including the National Cleaner Production Centre, Forbes Marshall Lanka, World Trade Center Colombo, BiC and DENTA Manufacturing, and MAS Fabrics Thulhiriya. In her speech, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya mentioned that cutting down on energy waste could save foreign currency and help stabilize the national economy. She highlighted that public and private sector organizations that excelled in energy efficiency last year should be recognized. She stressed the importance of promoting effective energy management across all types of businesses, from large industries to small and medium enterprises. The Prime Minister also pointed out that Sri Lanka is dedicated to international agreements like the Paris Agreement, which aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions and combat global warming. She stated that the country is focusing on adopting innovative technologies, increasing renewable energy sources, and ensuring long-term energy security. Minister of Power and Energy Engineer Kumara Jayakody addressed the audience as well, mentioning that the government plans to increase the renewable energy share to 70 percent by 2030. He explained that reforms are underway as part of a national policy framework to change inefficient and polluting institutional setups, and that the restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board is nearing completion. The Minister noted that those who previously benefited from improper practices are now anxious due to the government's reform efforts, as such benefits are no longer sustainable. He also assured that transparent and proper procurement processes are being implemented to ensure the people of Sri Lanka gain fully from improved energy efficiency.
