Showers above 200 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
The Department of Meteorology issued a weather forecast on 22 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. The South-West monsoon is establishing itself across the island, and the rainy weather in the southwestern regions is set to continue for several more hours. Showers and possible thundershowers will occur at times in the mentioned provinces as well as in Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. The Northern province and Anuradhapura district will experience several instances of rain, while light showers or thundershowers may happen in the Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2:00 p.m. Winds could become fairly strong, reaching speeds of 35-45 km/h, particularly over the Western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Southern provinces, and Trincomalee district. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce damage from localized strong winds and lightning that could occur during thundershowers. Additionally, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings for Gampaha, Kalutara, and Ratnapura districts, which will remain in effect until 3:00 a.m. on 23 May 2026. Level II warnings are in place for Attanagalla in Gampaha, and Ratnapura and Kuruvita in Ratnapura. Level I warnings apply to Bulathsinghala in Kalutara and Eheliyagoda in Ratnapura.
