Showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-western and Southern provinces and in Anuradhapura, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts

Issued at 5:30 a.m. on 20 May 2026 by the Department of Meteorology The South-West monsoon is slowly settling over the island. Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the districts of Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya. Some areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall, exceeding 50 mm. In the Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts, showers or thundershowers may happen in a few places after 2:00 p.m. Winds can be fairly strong, reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h at times in the Western slopes of the central hills, and across the Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce risks from temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Northern, and Southern provinces, along with the Anuradhapura district.
