The main opposition party, SJB, claimed yesterday that the government has allowed student activists to take control of the disputed Malwana property, which was once associated with former Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Jagath Vithana, an MP from Kalutara District, told reporters that a group entered the property without permission, took it over, and started cleaning it while police officers did not intervene. He raised concerns about whether this action had government approval, stating that the government is responsible for the situation. Vithana warned that if such actions continue unchecked, they could lead to public unrest and more serious security issues. The Malwana property, which Basil Rajapaksa has denied owning, was taken over by the state after attempts to auction it were reportedly blocked. He emphasized that state assets are for the public and need proper protection. Meanwhile, members of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) occupied the Malwana site on May 14, arguing that it should be used for public purposes. The activists stated that previous governments have not effectively utilized properties allegedly bought with public money and called for the land to be given to universities that are struggling with space. The IUSF announced that they have started a “direct struggle” and plan to continue their occupation until their demands are met.
