Showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western and Northern provinces and in Trincomalee district.
The Department of Meteorology issued a weather forecast on 12 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. The low-pressure system situated northeast of Sri Lanka remains active in the surrounding sea area. This weather pattern will likely keep the island rainy for the next few days. Most regions will experience showers or thundershowers at times, along with overcast skies. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to reduce potential harm from strong localized winds and lightning during these thundershowers. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings for several districts, including Badulla, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, and Monaragala, effective until 9:00 p.m. on 12 May 2026. Level II landslide warnings are in effect for the Passara area in Badulla. Level I warnings have been issued for various areas, including Bandarawela in Badulla, Walallawita in Kalutara, and several locations in Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, and Monaragala districts. In a separate political development, the Philippine House of Representatives has voted to impeach Vice-President Sara Duterte for the second time, jeopardizing her 2028 presidential ambitions. This vote advances the impeachment process to the Senate, where a conviction would bar her from holding any public office. The 47-year-old politician currently leads early polls to succeed her former ally, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The allegations against her involve misuse of public funds and threats made against Marcos, his wife, and his cousin, the former House Speaker.
