He raised questions regarding whether the circumstances surrounding the death were a suicide, murder, or if Chandrasena was forced to take his own life. During a media briefing, Kariyawasam noted that Chandrasena had recently attracted controversy after he reportedly submitted a court affidavit that included claims of threats against him.
