“Let’s move forward together in unity to build a country where all labour is valued, rights are protected, and equality prevails” -PM
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the essential roles played by workers in plantations, ports, railways, and both public and private sectors, whose efforts have led to the labor rights enjoyed today. As International Workers' Day is observed, she honored all workers globally, especially those who lost their lives for an eight-hour workday in Chicago in 1886. This year's celebration is particularly meaningful as it comes under a government formed by the people's will, honoring the entire working community of Sri Lanka. The government is committed to respecting labor and protecting workers' rights. They aim to create a just and safe workplace by improving existing services and introducing new programs to elevate the living standards of workers. Ensuring fair access for all citizens is a key goal. It is also crucial to foster an environment where everyone can have a dignified work life. One of the government’s top priorities is to develop a national social protection system that acknowledges unpaid labor and provides social security for those workers. On this May Day, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to move forward in unity to create a country where all labor is valued, rights are upheld, and equality is achieved. With the commitment and strength of all workers, she hopes for a shared vision of a thriving nation with a beautiful life for all.
