Sri Lanka Police have reported a worrying trend in road accidents, showing a steady rise each year. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Ranagala, who leads the Police Traffic Control and Road Safety Division, revealed that 676 fatal road accidents have occurred so far this year. He shared this information during a media briefing in Colombo aimed at promoting road safety. SSP Ranagala pointed out that fatal accidents are becoming a major issue, with an increase of 74 accidents and 80 deaths compared to previous figures. He identified key reasons for these accidents, including poor road conditions, reckless driving, speeding, and driving while intoxicated. He also mentioned that pedestrians are the most affected group. Up until April 5, 230 pedestrians and 247 motorcyclists had died in these accidents. During the same briefing, Dr. Manilka Sumanatilleke, President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, noted that most victims of road accidents are young people.
