On Monday, the UAE showed its support for Bahrain by calling on the Security Council to act regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the situation is no longer just a regional matter; it poses a direct threat to global stability. In a message posted on X, the UAE Mission to the UN said, “The UAE stands with Bahrain in urging the Security Council to take action on the Strait of Hormuz. As emphasized by H.E. Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, this is not only a regional issue—it directly threatens global stability, food and energy security, and international law. Every day without action brings the world closer to a larger crisis, with the countries of the Global South facing the worst outcomes. We appreciate Bahrain's leadership in the Security Council and its diplomatic work to advance this resolution.” Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also posted on X, stating, “The Foreign Minister insists that the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz needs immediate international attention to prevent serious humanitarian and economic consequences.” The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Friday (local time) on a draft resolution from Bahrain that seeks to allow member states to use “all defensive means necessary” to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict in West Asia, according to CNN. This proposal arrives as tensions rise over maritime security, which has severely disrupted energy trade due to the near blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global energy trade. Bahrain, currently holding the rotating presidency of the Security Council, has faced criticism from Iran during the conflict and is calling for an international response to protect global navigation routes. “The Kingdom of Bahrain has presented a draft resolution to your esteemed council concerning Iran's unlawful and unjustified efforts to control international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This draft demands a firm response to actions that are irresponsible and illegitimate. Such actions threaten the interests of nations and people worldwide,” stated Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the Foreign Minister of Bahrain, during a UNSC meeting on Thursday (local time).
