Red Cross joins calls for de-escalation after Trump threatens Iranian infrastructure
The Red Cross has joined others in urging for calm after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. The organization stated that threats against civilian infrastructure should not “become the new norm in warfare.” Mirjana Spoljaric, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, emphasized that intentional threats against critical civilian infrastructure and nuclear sites must not be accepted as standard in conflicts. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that attacks on Iran’s infrastructure could lead to serious consequences beyond the region, affecting global energy and the economy. Iran has also conducted strikes on energy facilities and other infrastructure in Persian Gulf nations. Spoljaric remarked, “Any war fought without limits goes against the law. It is unacceptable, inhumane, and devastating for whole populations.” Earlier, European Council President António Costa also stated that targeting civilian infrastructure, including energy sites, would be “illegal and unacceptable.”
