Namal Karunaratne, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, announced that a ship with 25,000 metric tons of fertilizer is expected to reach Sri Lanka tomorrow, April 5. He assured that the government is prepared to handle the fertilizer issues caused by the current global situation. The Deputy Minister noted that, despite initial worries among farmers at the start of the Yala season, the country has enough Muriate of Potash (MOP) and Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) fertilizer, known locally as “Mada Pohora,” to meet current needs. Karunaratne mentioned that there might be a small issue with Urea fertilizer, but there are nearly 100,000 metric tons already in stock, which is more than the 80,000 metric tons needed for paddy cultivation. He added that extra supplies may be required for other crops. To address this, the ship carrying 25,000 metric tons of fertilizer is arriving on April 5, and orders for more shipments have been placed for the near future.
