Extreme heat can trigger mental health issues - Psychiatrist
Extreme heat can cause mental health problems, according to Psychiatrist Vindya Wijayabandara. She spoke at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau today (01), discussing how high temperatures affect mental well-being. Dr. Wijayabandara noted that being too hot can lead to dehydration, which changes body chemistry and can harm a person’s mental health. She explained, “High heat can cause depression, stress, disturbed mental states, and restlessness. Stress, anxiety, and depression are connected, and extreme temperatures can make these issues worse. Dehydration from excessive heat can lower mental health. Changes in brain chemicals and hormones impact how we feel. When it gets hotter, it can disrupt sleep, leading to depression. High temperatures can also increase stress levels. Some groups are more vulnerable, such as those with chronic illnesses, young children, pregnant women, and older adults. Additionally, using alcohol and drugs can worsen mental health. Drinking alcohol is not advisable in hot conditions, as it can lead to mental instability and increased stress. Extreme heat can also result in forgetfulness and lapses in memory. To maintain a healthy mind, Dr. Wijayabandara recommends doing relaxing exercises, meditating, listening to music, and engaging in activities that connect you with nature. It is important to take steps to keep your mental health in good shape, especially in Sri Lanka's extreme heat.
