Balendra Shah, a former rapper turned politician, is set to take the oath of office as Nepal's new prime minister. His election marks a significant change in the country's political landscape, coming after a major victory in the first elections since the youth-led protests last year. At just 35 years old, Shah's appeal lies in his promise for change, resonating with voters who are frustrated by corruption, nepotism, and the rule of the elite. Prior to his inauguration on Friday, Shah, known by his stage name Balen, released an uplifting song about Nepal's future. In the track, which quickly received over two million views shortly after launching, he declared, “Undivided Nepali, this time history is being made.” The song reflects his background in the underground rap scene, where he used his music to address issues like corruption and social challenges in Nepal. Shah has only served as the mayor of Kathmandu for three years. He joined forces with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to run for prime minister and achieved a significant win in this month’s general elections. His followers view him as a representative of change and a departure from the traditional political figures in Nepal. However, some people doubt whether the relatively young RSP can fulfill its ambitious promises. Born in 1990 in Naradevi, Kathmandu, Shah is the youngest of his parents' children. His father practices Ayurveda, while his mother focused on raising the family. Shah is married and lives with his wife and daughter.
