Agreement signed to hand over vehicle number plate printing to new company
A new company will now print number plates for motor vehicles in Sri Lanka, following the signing of an agreement today (10). The ceremony was attended by the Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, the Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, and members of the private company's board of directors. Kamal Amarasinghe, the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, mentioned that the new company must start printing number plates within three months. He explained that it took a long time to finalize the agreement, which had to be submitted to the Cabinet and approved, following advice from the Attorney General. Amarasinghe added that several discussions had already occurred with the company, and they hope to start work in about two months. The project is worth around Rs. 3 billion and will be managed by the company for five years, starting today. The Commissioner General noted that the work will begin at the office in Werahera, which has ample space. Number plate printing had been paused for nearly ten months, so it will take time to catch up on the backlog. However, they aim to begin operations by the end of April or early May, and it won’t take the full three months. The company has already started some preliminary work at the Werahera site. During the event, the company also stated that they have made arrangements to import the necessary printing machines, which should arrive within three weeks.
