Mojtaba Khamenei, potential successor to Supreme Leader, reported alive
Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and viewed by some experts as a possible successor, has been confirmed to be alive by the Iranian news source Mehr News Agency. The agency reported, “Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader's son, is in good health.” They also mentioned that he is currently looking into “important issues” concerning the nation, though no specifics were given. As the second son of the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba is believed to have significant influence behind the scenes. He is closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran's most powerful military group, and the Basij, a volunteer paramilitary organization. However, a transition from father to son in leadership would face challenges due to political and religious sensitivities in Iran. The Shiite clerical tradition typically does not support dynastic power transfers, especially in a system that arose from a revolution that ended a monarchy. Additionally, there are practical issues: Mojtaba is not well-known as a senior cleric and does not hold an official government role. In 2019, he was sanctioned by the United States.
