The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has announced the arrest of a woman accused of cheating nearly Rs. 16 million by offering fake job opportunities in Romania. Officers from the SLBFE's Special Investigation Unit took her into custody after receiving numerous complaints. In total, 15 people reported that she had taken their money, claiming she had worked in Romania before and could help them get jobs there through her connections. However, she did not deliver the promised jobs. Following these complaints, an investigation began, but the suspect went into hiding. Authorities received tips that she was in areas like Piliyandala, Wellampitiya, Kolonnawa, and Kahathuduwa, but she managed to escape during several police raids. Four other people who allegedly helped her with the scam were also arrested and brought to court. The SLBFE revealed that investigators eventually reached out to the suspect using an undercover agent, asking her to come to a lawyer's house in Kolonnawa to sign a foreign employment agreement. She was arrested at that location. The suspect was later presented in front of the No. 05 Magistrate’s Court at the Aluthkade Courts Complex, where the Magistrate ordered her to be remanded until March 3, as stated by the SLBFE.
