Second reading of Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill passed
The second reading of the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill has successfully passed in Parliament. This Bill aims to eliminate pensions for Members of Parliament and was introduced on January 7 by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Dr. Harshana Nanayakkara. The Bill faced a constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court. However, after reviewing it, the Supreme Court ruled that the Bill does not conflict with the Constitution and can be approved by Parliament with a simple majority. Today, Parliament held a debate on the second reading of the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill. After the discussion, a vote was taken, with 154 Members of Parliament supporting the Bill and only 2 opposing it. With the second reading approved, the third reading will follow in Parliament.
