LNP - 200 cigarette-free zones established countrywide

The Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) Association has announced the establishment of 200 cigarette-free zones across Sri Lanka as part of its broader initiative to promote a smoke-free society. Speaking to the media, Public Health Inspector Sandun Ratnayake revealed that these zones prohibit the sale and smoking of cigarettes entirely. He said notices have been placed in these areas to inform and educate the public, fostering greater awareness about the harmful effects of smoking.  Ratnayake highlighted the collective effort behind the initiative, noting that clergy, volunteer groups, non-Governmental organisations, teachers, and principals within these zones have lent their support to the program. . The PHIs Association plans to expand this initiative, aiming to create more cigarette-free zones across the country. The ultimate goal is to transform Sri Lanka into a smoking-free nation. According to the Association, smoking and related illnesses claim at least 20,000 lives annually in Sri Lanka, underscoring the urgent need for such measures.
