Tamil MP Urges Canadian Conservatives to Push for Review of LTTE Terrorist Designation

03 Nov 2026 By Lankanewspapers.com Local

Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Suresh Shritharan has called on members of Canada's Conservative Party to advocate for a formal review of the country's ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which has classified the organisation as a terrorist entity under Canadian law.

A Direct Appeal to Canadian Lawmakers

Shritharan directed his appeal specifically at Conservative MPs, urging them to use their political influence to initiate a reassessment of the longstanding designation. The LTTE has been listed as a terrorist organisation in Canada for years, a classification that continues to have significant implications for members of the Tamil diaspora living there.

The Sri Lankan MP's intervention reflects the ongoing efforts by sections of the Tamil political establishment to reshape how Western governments view the former militant organisation, which was militarily defeated by Sri Lankan security forces in May 2009 following a decades-long armed conflict.

Diaspora Interests at the Forefront

Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diaspora communities in the world, with a particularly concentrated population in and around the Greater Toronto Area. The LTTE ban has long been a point of contention within that community, as it restricts certain forms of commemoration, fundraising, and political expression linked to the organisation.

Shritharan's move to engage Conservative parliamentarians is seen as a strategic one, given the party's current political momentum in Canada and its influence in shaping national security policy debates.

Broader Implications for Sri Lanka

The call is likely to draw attention in Colombo, where successive governments have firmly opposed any international moves to delist or reassess the LTTE's terrorist status. Sri Lankan authorities have consistently maintained that revisiting such designations would undermine reconciliation efforts and send the wrong message regarding political violence.

Critics of the review push argue that the LTTE was responsible for numerous devastating attacks on civilians and military personnel during the civil war, including suicide bombings and the assassination of high-profile leaders, and that its terrorist designation remains warranted.

Supporters, however, contend that with the organisation no longer operational, a review would allow Tamil communities abroad to engage more freely with their cultural and political heritage without fear of legal repercussions.

It remains to be seen whether Shritharan's appeal will gain traction among Canadian Conservative MPs, many of whom represent constituencies with substantial Tamil voter bases.
